Bound in the publishers red cloth with gilt signature of Stanley to upper board. The subscriber's edition has 62 plates against 36 found in the ordinary 1st edition of 1890 and the Keltie introduction on Stanley in Africa. A vg clean copy seldom found in this condition, the text block is heavy and pulls from the binding in many cases. Stanley's expedition through the heart of East Africa to the land of the Nile originally intended as a rescue mission for Emin Pasha although failing in its primary objective Stanley discovered the snowcapped range of Ruwenzori the mountains of the moon. A new lake which he named the Albert Edward Nyanza etc.
