Sir Francis Chantrey a sculptor shot two woodcock with 1 shot at Holkham, Norfolk on November 20 1829. It was sufficiently well regarded to merit this delightful anthology of verse on the subject. A monument to the 2 woodcock was presented to W.Coke of Holkham in 1834. An etching of the monument is used as the frontis and part for the gilt vignette to the upper cover. C.G. Oates edited his brother's notebooks and published them in 1881, many of the first editions were destroyed by fire. The second edition included updated information not found in the 1st + a six-page preface by C.G.
