viii- 397-(4), 4 engraved plates, armorial bookplate to the front paste down. Of, Charles R. C. Hibbert, some occasional spotting to plates and contents. Bound in a later circa 1860s 1/2 tan calf. To the last page a contemporary handwritten manuscript recipe for sportsmen? To verso blank a recipe? in horses. Followed by an unnumbered printed page a "Scheme of a Sportsman's journal" listing where killed, when, types of game, remarks, filled in for the years 1822/23/24/25 noting game shot in the year. The next 4 blank pages are laid out as a game register, for the previous dates but giving months, September through to January, noting daily bags and where killed. A quick search brings up places in Yorkshire and Cumbria. Then follows another page of recipes, there are also 4 loose pages (6 sides) with similar game registers for 1827 1836/ 1837, and a June to August undated register of Trout, Eels, other Fish. The 3rd edition has considerable additions, includes a reference to Forsyth's percussion system, an engraving of grouse shooting from a horse. Some sporadic browning to the text of volume four, otherwise the text is generally clean in all volumes, the plates bright with no spotting. Bound in the publishers red cloth, gilt ruled line to board edges and titles in gilt to the spines. The cloth in exceptional condition with no fading or marks. Still retaining the rare DUST JACKETS some chipping to head and tail of spines and edges of vols 1 3 & 4 more so to volume 2 which has some repairs to the verso the other DJs have had no restoration. The supplement in the publisher printed card covers as issued. An exceptional set of the first edition of Thorburn's finest work which ran to many editions. The cloth so often found faded and marked and rare in this condition more so with the dust
