1904.  Subscribers edition, 1st.  192 pages, large 8vo., TEG, coloured frontis + 3 other coloured plates, pages uncut, foxing to end papers, some occasional foxing to contents. original limp red cloth binding with gilt roebuck being attacked by hound to upper board. The book is in 1/4 morroco clampshell box, cloth sides, spine in 6 compartments with title and rolled gilt tooling. Limited to 100 copies. This was the first book in English solely devoted to the Roe. Part 1 The Natural History; Part II Roe Hunting; Part III Roe Shooting; Part IV The Roe In Heraldry; Part V Management Of Roe. An extremely scarce title, there were 72 initial subscribers to this book, which included many leading sportsmen of the day, libraries and institutions. A book which seldom appears for sale. A vg copy in the original binding of a scarce title in particularly good condition and well presented in the clapshell box. [21718]

1985.  1st thus Edn,.  Anthony Atha.  Diss.  175 pages, AEG, landscape 4to. 12 full page colour plates, and full page and text illus by Ian Oates, with an introduction by Lord Lovat.. Limited to 350 numbered copies this being number 58 of the special edition signed by Lovat and Ian Oates bound in a half green morroco with gilt stag head vignette to upper board and stag head motifs to spine. Ownership bookplate to front paste down, lacking the publisher's slipcase. There were also a few copies with an original sketch bound in full leather, the ordinary edition is bound in green cloth. A vg + copy. Originally published in 2 volumes in 1848. The second volume from which the text of this book is drawn. It contains fascinating descriptions of deer stalking as it was practiced at that time both in the Highlands and on the Continent [21745]

A Sojourn In The Highlands, Achanalt 1885

.  privately printed.  104 (16) pages, 4to., tipped in original albumen photograph frontis of Mary Bignold, over 100 illus from drawings throughout. the last (16) pages printed on 1 side are sepia illus and drawings by Speed "of various spots scattered about the forests of Loch Rosque, Strathbran and Achanalt in the more recent seasons". Some spotting to frontis and tissue guard, original maroon cloth, gilt antlers to upper board with the letters MB beneath, some light discolouration to cloth in places. A rare title COPAC located only 2 copies at Durham University and the National Library of Scotland. A journal of a sporting season in Achanalt Ross-shire from leaving Euston Station in August 1885 to the last entry on December 21st followed by "deaths 1885", days recorded all have illustrations for the days of sport etc., The book is dedicated to "Mistress Bignold" by Lancelot Speed, the estate was owned by Mary's father Sir Arthur Bignold, it is thought Mary inherited the estate on his death in 1915. The book was reprinted in a limited edition in 1996 by David Grayling using Kenneth Whiteheads copy [20949]
