Blacker worked at 54 Dean Street, Soho, London from 1842 - 1857. In 1842 he published The Art Of Angling and Complete System Of Fly Making. The book was reissued in 1843 as Blacker's Catechism Of Fly Making, this edition contained actual flies, the numbering of flies differs in some copies. The book was reissued in 1855 as Blacker's Art Of Fly Making. This copy is an early issue containing the scarce coloured frontis, the plate list is part of a four-page extract review of the book taken from Bells Life in London dated April 8th, 1855, referring to the recently published Art Of Fly Making, it is noted that "the book contains no fewer than 17 engraved plates" and how "Blacker supervised the colouring of the plates to the highest standard". It has been noted that Blacker issued many of his books to order, this would account for the variations to books containing flies. I have handled other copies of the 1855 edition where all the plates are uncoloured or differ in number and the tooling of the leather-bound copies differ. The plate list calls for 22 plates including the engraved title page. It has been noted that Blacker issued many of his books to order, this would account for the variations to books containing flies. I have handled other copies of the 1855 edition where all the plates are uncoloured or differ in number and the tooling of the leather-bound copies differ. W.S. 32/33 ?650
