Bound in a contemporary polished green calf with ornate gilt tooling to their spine compartments contrasting red and black labels. Bound with half titles, presentation inscription tom the inner blank of volume 1, on leaving Eton. A very good clean copy in a fine period binding of Burton's extraordinary travel narratives of great hardship on his pilgrimage. Burton made the pilgrimage in complete disguise as a Muslim native of the Middle Est. Spending several days in Mecca, he performed the associated rites of the pilgrimage such as circumambulating the Kaaba etc. Penzer p50-52 notes certain number of copies of the second edition were bought by booksellers from the publishers in an unbound state, to be subsequently issued in somewhat elaborate bindings. These were sold for school prize books."
