4to, bound in a contemporary full vellum with faint writing to the upper cover including "Keith 1779" and ink drawings in part to the front and rear cover. Some browning and scratch marks to the vellum, binding is tight with no splits. Later bookplate of R. C. Fiske to the front paste down. A detailed and comprehensive guide with tables and observations. Circa 100 pages + blanks neatly written in ink in a legible and neat hand. Presumable a Gunnery Officers lecture notes compiled at the height of The American War of Independence 1775-1783.The contents includes a 5-page index, some of the subjects covered are Composition of Fire Ships, Composition for Sky Rockets Dimensions and Weights of Round Carcases, Proportion of Shot for Tin cases Sea Service Grape Shot and Proportion, Making Gunpowder, Upon Throwing Shells, Table of distances with Object of Length and Throwing Shells, Preparation of Stores for Landing with Two Battalion Guns, Of the Shooting of Cannons Mortars Distances taken in Gibraltar, Problems, Demonstration.
