256 pages, 4o., over 190 illus in colour and b/w from photographs, line drawings, early adverts etc., signed on the title page by Lawrence Shelton. A fine copy in the publishers pictorial binding. The book follows the life of a successful English gunmaker and businessman John Clabrough who was born in Yorkshire, England. He learned the gunsmith trade from his father, travelled to the United States in 1857, worked as a gunsmith and opened his own shop in San Francisco. In 1873 he returned to England to produce guns for the American market. The book contains some excellent close-up photographs of the guns.
