Spotting to prelims and some occasional spotting to contents, publishers black cloth, gilt standing "pilgrim" to upper boards and mausoleum to rear boards, chipping to head and tail of spine, light rubbing to corner of Vol I. the first title in the Memorial edition taken from the 3rd edition with a new preface by Lady Burton and contains all appendixes from previous editions and a complete index. Although not a hunting title it is considered to be one of the greatest works on travel ever published. Burton being one of the first Westerners to enter the Holy City of Mecca assuming the character and costume of a pilgrim. Penzer 53.
