Summary: 2 Vols, XIIX IX 411 pages, AEG, bound before title and after last page 24 + 24 pages of blank sheets. This copy is illustrated with 14 copper plates on India paper and extra illustrations with 77 text woodcuts being reproduced as full page plates on India paper placed opposite the corresponding text woodcut. 2 of the plates 'the marble table and chiming piece' and 'view of Thorpe cloud' have a further copy of the illustration tipped onto margin with note illustration before proof. Also the plate of Amwell Hill is reproduced as the woodcut and as a similar illustration on separate pages. There has also been added 6 engraved plates on card of fish. There is a note to the verso of the FEP 'This copy with duplicate impressions" the prints inserted with other material; also not on blank before frontis "fish on India paper bought at Hazelwood's sale 1833". Hazelwood was a keen collector of sporting books who reprinted Berners Book Of St Albans. Westwood and Satchell note that Hazelwood's " curious and valuable library of books relating to fishing, hunting and other sports sold Dec 6 1833 and seven following days". Hazelwoods gilt vellum oval crest to front paste down, bound in full dark green morocco gilt, Walton device to front and rear board in gilt ruled 2 line border with tooled corners. Walton ciphers and fish to spine compartments the gilt on the spine dull; overall the binding is showing some rubbing to edges and corners, surface rubbing to spine. Coigney 23 B Horne 22 notes a similar copy being Gosdens own copy with the extra proof plates with the woodcuts of fish "this set is described by Horne as very rare" ALSO Walton Izaak - The Lives of Dr John Donne, Sir Henry Wotton, Mr Richard Hooker, Mr George Herbert and Dr Robert Sanderson, 1825, XVIII, 503 pages, advert leafs bound in before title and at end. AEG 11 full page engraved plates on India paper, extra illustrations with the 52 text woodcuts being reproduced as full page plates on India paper. Note on blank before title 'proof on India paper added bought at the Hazelwood sale 1833'. Hazelwood's gilt oval velum crest to front paste down; tipped in on blank is a letter to Hazelwood thanking him for the lone of a volume for Walton's Lives, also tipped in on blank is a letter with envelop to Hazelwood from John Major (publisher); Major apologises in sending the book 'but for the delay in the India paper wood cuts' signed John Major. Bound in full green morocco, 2 gilt ruled borders with decorative corners to boards (identical to The Complete Angler), gilt tooling to spine, gilt on spine dull, some rubbing to corners and edges, surface rubbing to spine, wear to base and lower back edge of spine. There is a note on inner blank relating to the cost of the book, the additional illustrations and binding cost by Lewis (Charles Lewis was one of the leading London binders of the period 1786-1836). Two scarce editions with good associations.
