Summary: 72 pages, 8 pages of adverts, Frontis illustration is a photograph by G. W. Wilson, of Jedburgh Abbey. The guide runs to page 52 followed by a separate title page for the Anglers Guide with a verse to the verso "A First Saumon" then through to page 72. The advertisements are all for Thomas Smails products mostly from his premises at 16 High St Jedburgh, including "Fishing Material". Tipped onto front blank end paper a folded note on headed paper from Thoma Smart to the editor of the field to review the guide, noting "the angling part is by a thorough Practical Angler in the district and his experience in all the streams," signed by Thomas Smail. Pasted to the front paste down the angling bookplate of, Francis Francis. Bound in a plain contemporary watered silk covered boards with leather title label to the spine. A rare regional guide more so with the Francis Francis provenance. Two copies located in UK libraries one in the National Library of Scotland with wraps bound in previously sold at Bloomsbury auctions in 2003 at The David Beazley Angling Library lot 427. And a copy in the British Library again sold at Bloomsbury auctions, in the John Mckinley Angling Library in 2005 lot 287. Which included a "letter from the bookseller R. J. W. Coleby to J. A. McKinley, Esq. concerning the variant states of this title, together with Coleby's description of Variants A and B. This copy is designated Variant B". Coleby does not list a copy in his regional bibliography. I have not been able to locate an earlier edition than the 1871. WS p195
