Summary: 2 volumes, large folio, unpaginated, THE RED DEER etched title and 62 plates on 46 pages, THE FALLOW DEER etched titled page and 79 plates on 52 sheets. The copy of Fallow Deer has a 2pp undated autograph letter from the author to Lady Jackson pasted to front free endpaper, Hills discusses the deer in Kensington Gardens with a sketched map and a pencil drawing of a deer beneath trees. In the Red Deer tipped in a printed description relating to 3 plates on the "growth of their horns". Some browning to prelims and very occasional spotting to both volumes, with the bookplate of Lady Gwydyr. Bound in uniform contemporary diced calf, gilt rebacked with original spine laid down, a few scuffs and chips at the extremities. An impressive set of a scarce work. As the copy held at Durham University Library "The plates are dated between 1802 and 1816. Hills is known to have issued some 780 plates of various animals between 1798 and 1817. The present work appears to be a collected edition of his engravings of deer. Bound and possibly issued, with "fallow Deer" by the same artist. There was also a volume on the Roe Deer published in 1815
