Summary: 6 Volumes, Ixv 285, xxxi 347, xxxiv 358, xxi 353, xx 383. lxviii 327 pages, TEG, pages uncut, 5 Vols, together with the supplementary volume of Cripps-Day's index of armour auction results. small folio, illustrated throughout with 1805 figures from photographs drawings etc and a similar 203 figures to the Cripps Day volume. Armorial bookplate to front paste down of the 5 volumes. A vg set in the original cloth, the cloth marked as usual, apparently this is caused by the glue used reacting with the cloth, original red leather labels. The Cripps Day volume clean and free of the marking although bound the same. A monumental work of research which the author states is "a faithful record of my observations and notices since boyhood". Laking became internationally recognized as a leading expert on arms and armour, and in 1900 was appointed honorary inspector of the armouries at the Wallace CollectionThe author died on November 22, 1919, a few days after the completed first volume had been delivered to him by the publishers. The remaining volumes were still in type and were completed from Lakings notes by Francis Henry Cripps Day. It remains the largest and most fully illustrated survey of its subject ever published (ODNB)
