The society was founded in 1893 with John Bickerdyke in the chair and assisted by F.G.Aflalo, the number of members being very small, holding meetings in various hotels and restaurants until a permanent room became available holding meetings weekly on a Wednesday. The volumes are a collection of articles and papers read before the society on sea angling, tackle, sea fishing including overseas etc. articles by Sheringham, Holcombe, Aflalo, Marston etc.,
