Eyre and William Spottiswoode.  58 pages, Large 8vo illustrated with 17 plates, all bar 4 linen backed and mostly folding some dust soiling to some blank margin edges the plates, the plates are of different sizes when folded, all the edges gilt. Handwritten note to the front paste down noting the book was presented to the Royal United Service Institution by Major. Longstaff May 1933, to front free end paper the Institutions book plate. Bound in a full dark red morroco with gilt tile to the upper board with a central large Royal Crest, within decorative rolled gilt frames, and repeated to the rear cover. The spine in 6 compartments with gilt title, compartments with ornate tooling. Some surface rubbing to corners and edges, the bottom of spine chipped. A very good copy with the provenance of the Royal Crest. The instructions cover the use of the The Enfield Pattern 1853 rifle-musket, Royal Small Arms Factory developed the Pattern 1853 Enfield in the 1850s. The 39 in (99 cm) barrel had three grooves, with a 1:78 rifling twist, and was fastened to the stock with three metal bands, so that the rifle was often called a "three band" model. The rifle's cartridges contained 2+1/2 drams, or 68 grains (4.4 g)[3] of gunpowder, and the ball was typically a 530-grain (34 g). [22831]
