Bookplate of Kenneth Doble to front paste down, two offset (2.5 x 1.25 cm) tape marks to both front and rear free end papers. Some very occasional spotting to contents and closed page edge. Very occasional pencil notes to margins relating to the book. Note to bottom margin of preface page the first letter A in ink possible the writer had second thought of using a pen! Original tan paper cover boards tan cloth spine. Paper title label to upper board and spine, the spine label chipped and cracked, some even darkening to the cloth. A purpose made cloth covered slipcase present. One of the rarest of big game hunting titles, this as privately printed by George L.Harrison in an edition of 250 copies for distribution to noteworthy African sportsmen and other luminaries. Harrison who was on Safari in Rhodesia in 1908 not only hunted with Finaughtys son, but later met the author and was given a set of the Rhodesian Journal which had serialized the elder Finaughtys recollections. From these, Harrison published the work less one chapter from an issue missing from his set. William Finaughty entered Matabeleland and Mashonaland in the 1860s, the "elephants practically did not know what a gun shot was". The Fishing Journal For The Year 1823

.  approx. 10.5 x 16 cm 28 pages in a neat legible hand original stitched card covers with hand written title and owners names to upper flap. Some foxing to contents and covers. The owner's names are, Henry Herring and Charles Barnwell Herring. The first 20 pages run from January to October giving the day and month and fishing location with notes on fish caught baits and general observations in most cases initialed by HH or CBH to bottom of page. Then follows 6 pages from April 1827 to August. The last 3 pages is a list of 24 things "He that would be a complete angler ought to know". The fishing takes place in Norfolk waters i.e. Heigham , Foundry Bridge ,Wroxham, Keswick, Wramplingham, Ashwicken etc. Charles Barnwell Herrin born 1801 was the Rev and Lord of the Manor of Mileham Norfolk. A very good early diary in good condition with a good province more research needed. [20916]

1934-1943.  Small 13.5 cm x 9.5 cm landscape register circa 80 pages of which 40 are filled in ink. Columns printed in red for Date, "Where Caught, River , Rods , Fly, Weight, Total, Remarks". The fishing starts in April 1934 fishing for trout and sea trout on the river Nairn? 4 pages. From 1935 to 1943 most of the fishing takes place on the river Bladnoch for salmon details on the pools, fly, the fish and general remarks on the days fishing. The fish caught range from 8lb to 20 lbs. The fishing takes place from February to October with circa 40 fish per year. A well-presented game book with "John Macpherson Sporting Stores Inverness" label to the front-end paper. All page edges gilt bound in full tan leather , a very good copy. There is no identification to the compiler other than initials of friends? in the remarks. More research may well identify the owner. [23512]

Most volumes with photographic portraits of leading anglers including Halford and Senior with obituary, also drawings occasional text illustrations, the contents clean and tight. All volumes bound in a contemporary ? tan calf with lime green cloth covered boards gilt title to upper cover bound by Tresises Binders, Burton - On -Trent. The spine to volume 1 heavily rubbed with cracking to spine edges in places contents and binding remain tight. The other volumes show some surface rubbing in places with some dust soiling to the cloth. The first 6 volumes of Flyfishers Club possible the most famous fishing club in the world. With the contributions of some of the great anglers of the time, edited by Martin Mosely A.C. Kent and R.B. Marston, the journal carried on thorough the difficult war years although having to be checked by Whitehall before publication. [23585]
