During 1873 until 1883 this gun was constantly under test at the French Navel Testing ground at Gavre, which may explain the early Paris publication. Details of the guns, mounts, ammunition, effects of shot, care, and cleaning etc, both for Military and Naval use. "a mass of information is presented from which the artillerist is enabled to form a true and exact judgement not only of the absolute value of the Hotchkiss Revolving Cannon but also of the comparative value of all other machine guns".
